Patio Daddy-O - Govnor's Public House 4.13.07

First of all, before I get to the Daddy-Os. I have to applaud Govnors for being one of the very few non-Demarco-booked venues in the area who will have some of the local talent play there. I really respect Govnor's for that and I hope they continue.

On the other hand, Govnor's is pretty much known among musicians as one of the worst venues in the area for acoustics. It's really hard to not feed-back when you're playing against a solid wall of non-sound-absorbing glass. Your sound can only be so-good in this situation.

Getting to the Patio Daddy-os, they appear to be playing everywhere when you check out the web site at http://patiodaddyoband.com/index.htm. This is good. There are many bands out there not playing this much but there are variables that can enable a band to be booked way more often (how much they charge is most of them).

There are many different "levels" of bands and I will outline my system of categorization in a future blog. This 3-piece band (guitar-drums-keyboards) with no bass guitar is just OK to me. I may be wrong, but I get the impression that at least two of the three guys were players when they were in their early twenties and knocked off for about 10-12 years to raise some kids and give their wives some time to cool down from being pissed at them for being gone playing in bars two week ends a month when they first got married. They then decided to get back in and got a band together. Again, I'm just speculating.

I was only there at Govnor's to see them for a set but I heard the usual Mustang Sally, a couple of SRV tunes, Stray Cat Strut and a pretty weak arrangement of You Wreck Me ... in addition to a couple of older 70s tunes. The guitar playing is good ... not great ... but good and solid. The drummer is adequate and a good singer. The keyboard player is no Keith Emerson but really, he doesn't have to be. He held up his dual roal of being the bassist and the keyboardist. They do sound good together and have that certain tightness that playing fairly often creates.

However, I'm just not a fan. They have that "roadhouse band" kind of feel and look. They all appear to be in that 35 to 45 year old bracket which means that their favorite music is the stuff they play ... which appeals mainly to the over-40 crowd. Nothing wrong with that. Govnor's was pretty packed when I was there. This music is not really the kind of stuff that appeals to the under 30 crowd.

All in all, I thought they were just "OK" and I really don't foresee me going too much out of my way to see them again ... but you know, that's just me. I'm glad they're playing often. I really am. And I'm glad they're a local group playing in a local venue where locals can see them!
