The Incognitos - Govnors Public House 6.1.07

I'm kind of freaking out right now. If it wasn't for the fact I was just at Govnor's, I could have sworn I was at Holiday Inn in the 1980's. The Incognitos are all guys; keyboard, guitar, bass and drums. They're all good players. They are a Class C+ band according to my ranking system.

They dress in neo-nerdy lounge band kind of clothes to the point where the drummer looked like he had a leisure suit on. They had really good equipment. They just all had the earmarks of a lounge group. I was only there for a few songs: Brown Eyed Girl, Some Kind Of Wonderful, You Shook Me All Night Long, Let's Get Together, Authority Song and (gulp) Soul Man.

They did the AC/DC song with the vocal an octave lower and with a lounge-style of singing. Their harmonies were fine but the vocals were just not inspired. Their playing just didn't have any "edge" to it. I'm not sure why the guitar player felt compelled to put on a pair of sunglasses to go out into the crowd to sing Some Kind of Wonderful but I think they thought the crowd would like it ... which they did. You just don't hear anyone play Soul Man anymore ... unless they're a lounge act. I also have to say that the audience there that night was a mix you'd usually find at a wedding or ...... at a Holiday Inn lounge in the 70's or 80's. This means that you can basically play a Bb Concert Scale and the crowd will go nuts.

Don't get me wrong. They are not a bad band. In fact, if you look at the bookings they have on their web site, I'd dare say they're playing more than just about anyone else. However, they are kind of an updated version of Murph and the Murph-Tones from the Blues Brothers. Just not my cup of sloe gin fizz. They have their place in that wild and wonderful world of entertainment we all love so much. This would be a great band to audition for your next wedding. I'm serious. (Actually, I wrote this blog before I checked out their web site.)
