After leaving Wool Street in Cary, I went over to Duke's Alehouse to catch a band I have never heard of before; Three Finger Fencl. It was a snowy night and I didn't expect a packed house ... and it wasn't. Actually, there wasn't anymore people there for a full band then there has been for single acts and duos. There should have been because people didn't know what theye were missing.
This is a great band! I was very impressed. You're aware from my prior post concerning Hooked On Sonics (the band I saw just before this one) that I have weird mixed feelings about bands playing to pre-recorded tracks. Three Finger Fencl was not playing to tracks (as far as I could tell) and they were very good.
They consisted of a bassist, three guitarists and a drummer. One guitar player switched off on keyboard once in a while to add some smaller brass and keyboard parts and two guitarists switched back and forth on acoustics and electrics. The bassist was good although he had a compulsion to constantly wipe down his strings. Just a little jab! He was good. Two of the guitarists were VERY good vocalists ... some of the best vocals I've heard in a long while. All three guitarists were good players and the drummer was very good as well. Very good sound mix, too.
Their song selection was also very good as I heard a lot of material I have not heard for a while in bars. Rain King (Counting Crows - one of my favorite songs!), some Stones, some Dave Matthews, Angel of Harlem (U2) and some good old Led Zep were offered up. Again. Great unstrained vocals and very in-tume. I'm telling you. Great vocals and hence, great harmonies.
I applaud you guys for the great mix of tunes and the excellent vocals. Now that the Alehouse has scaled back its stage to accomodate singles and duos, bands just don't fit well there anymore. Also, not much of a show but you don't need much of one when you present some great music. Maybe shorten up the time in between songs. Just a suggestion.
I hope everyone made it home safely after the gigs at the Alehouse and with Hooked on Sonics over at Wool Street. The blizzard rolled in during the performances and it got crazy out there with the weather. Check out Three Finger Fencel at: Three Finger Fencl
