Slamabama is a very good band. They are obviously well-rehearsed and have that flow that only groups who play 6+ gigs a month can really acquire. I have never heard of Slamabama so I had no idea as to what to expect. It's a 4-piece band with drums, bass guitar/vocalist and female vocalist. This is in essence a country band and a very enjoyable one at that. I stuck around for 1 set and heard some mighty fine Telecaster playing (you know how I get about Telecasters). The guitarist (J Juliano) was a very good vocalist as well. Lisa, the female vocalist was also good. It's too bad all she does is sing and hit a cowbell or a tambourine. She could add so much more if she played something but she does have a good voice and adds a great "county" presence to the act. She also harmonizes very well with Juliano. The drummer and bassist are very good. They worked very well together as all good bass players and drummers should. These two always have to be a sinc for a band to have that butt-kicking drive people want to hear and they had it.
I heard "Poor Poor Pitiful Me", "The Devil Went Down To Georgia", "Sharp Dressed Man", "Little Sister" some Tom Petty and (gulp) "Me and Bobby McGee" among many others. They do non-country rock tunes also but everything has that country edge and I think that is something different that people want to hear and that this area tends to be very lacking in.
Again, great band! There is something about country bands that is so "happy" if you know what I mean. The stage banter between songs was good (although I could scarcely make out a word of it due to the echo in the building) and they always had smiles on their faces ... even the bassist and drummer. Other bands could certainly draw a lesson from that.
I'm starting to like Wool Street more. Great mix of people there. I know the band has a lot to do with it but for Slamabama, there was a good mix of young and "older" in there.
Go see them! http://slamabama.com/
