Dejas Vu (Unplugged) - Wool Street (Cary) 6.11.08

Sometimes you get blindsided. I kind of pride myself on knowing who most of the bands are in the area. I saw there was someone named "Deja Vu" playing at Wool Street in Cary so I decided to see what this was about.

By the way. Wool Street is a very cool place if you have not been there yet. Big beautiful new two-floor bar. My only complaint about the place is that ALL BARS NOW CRAM IN AS MANY TVs AS THE CEILING AND ROOF SUPPORTS CAN POSSIBLY HANDLE. Maybe it's just me but this new trend in hanging TVs up in every available square centimeter of wall space is beginning to turn me off. I have not eaten there yet. That's next.

Enough said on that subject. Back to Deja Vu unplugged. There has been, and are currently, and always will be, a hundred bands named "Deja Vu" co-existing at the same time. I wanted to see what this was about. I entered, ordered a beer and watched two women strumming guitars and singing every song you've ever known.

They aren't bad. They sound good. They look good. They entertain the crowd and especially the guys. They play the right tunes. They're strummers and there's nothing all that wrong with that if they're entertaining. They just didn't blow me away as anything earth-shaking. Then I tried to locate them on the web.

They are playing 8,9,12 gigs a month, have 23 members and are playing all over the area. This is weird because I've never heard of them! This kind of freaks me out a bit. It really does. The tracks you can listen to sound kind of wedding-band-ish.

I'm going to just take a wild guess but I'm betting this is a "corporatized" band. What I mean by that is that I'm guessing they can split into several groups at any given time and can do all kinds of gigs all under the same name. They maybe can be all things to all customers. That is, if you want a wedding band, Deja Vu can do it. You want a club gig with 8o's rock, Deja Vu can do it. You want both kinds of bands on the same night, Deja Vu can do it.

That's just my impression. Maybe Deja Vu can e-mail me and explain all this to me. Anyway, the two women were enjoyable and they provided a good musical distraction. Check them out and patronize the new Wool Street in Cary!
