Murph - Duke's Alehouse 9.12.08

Sorry about being "off-line" here for a while but my schedule was very busy as well and I just didn't have much time to see other bands!

Duke's Alehouse and Kitchen. The "old" Duke O'Brien's. This was the first time I was there and it is the same yet very cleaned up. In the era of the post-smoking-ban, Duke's did a good thing cleaning the place up. They did a great job. Great looking floors and some new colors. The extension on the stage has been removed and the stage was refinished. No house big PA system any longer so the loud rowdy band era is over.

That's OK however. Although it's too bad downtown has lost a band venue, it's sticking to having live entertainment in the form of singles and duos and maybe trios. They kept live entertainment there and I absolutely applaud them for that. The place looks great!

Now to Murph. I have not heard of him and unfortunately could not locate a web site for him so if anyone out there knows of a web site for him, please let me know and I'll revise this blog to include it.

Murph is good. He is a single-act acoustic guitar player with no accompaniment except for his trusty Performer vocal harmonizer. I love those harmonizers but it can be a little disconcerting to go somewhere to see an acoustic guitar act and when the performer sings, you hear three or four people. However, I don't think the average audience really cares.

He played a lot of great songs and he's a good guitarist. He's young and plays the songs the 20-somethings relate to and sprinkles in the classic rock. I liked him. He has a very pleasant-sounding voice (when not overlaid with three processed harmonies) and he sings very well in-tune. I liked him. I think you should see him.

I also think you should see him next time he's at Duke's Alehouse so the place can be a little busier and they keep the entertainment there. There was not a lot of people there but I don't think that speaks for Murph's performance. Most places I've been playing at are suffering from diminished crowds and I think it's just a sign of the crap economy.

Help out Duke's and go there. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how nice it is in there now and I hear the food is great! And please check out the entertainment because you know ... I'm all about the entertainment ... be it bands or singles. As long as it's live music ....
